Working With Adobe Illustrator

Adobe Illustrator is a drawing program similar to Inkscape. It is useful for drawing cave map because it can import and export SVG file.  Although Illustrator is a more expensive and better known than Inkscape, it has certain quirks that make it tricky to use. This is probably because Inkscape was designed as an SVG editor from the ground up, whereas Illustrator just imports and exports SVG.

To help you deal with the quirks of Illustrator, I have compiled a list of issues that effect Illustrator, along with tips and techniques for drawing cave maps with the program.

 1. Exporting SVG Files to Illustrator. Older versions of Illustrator don't support certain features of SVG. Specifically, Illustrator version 10, CS1, and CS2 will have problems importing SVG cave maps.
Here is a description of the kinds of problems you can run into exporting cave maps to an older version of Illustrator

Upside Down Map. Illustrator version 10 and CS1 may display the map upside down.

Loading Errors. In Illustrator CS2, you may get a "Clipping will be lost on roundtrip to Tiny" error.

Map Not Centered In Frame.  In Illustrator CS2, you may find that the map is not centered in its frame or the frame is too small for the map.

To solve these problems, Compass allows you to export an SVG map in a mode that makes it compatible with early versions of Illustrator.

To make your SVG map compatible with versions 10, CS1 and CS2, check the "10/CS1/CS2 Compatible" box.
