Cutting, Copying and Pasting Cells

Top  Previous  Next

You can copy information from the individual cells of both the Heading Page and the Editor Page into the Windows clipboard. You can also copy data from the Windows clipboard into cells of both the Heading Page and Shot Page. This is a simple way to move data between cells. It is also a way to copy information between surveys.

Copying and Cutting Data. To copy or cut data to the Windows Clipboard, you must select the data that you wish to copy or cut. You can do this by clicking the mouse cursor on the cell you want to copy from. You can also select the cell by using the Arrow Keys or the Enter Key. Once you have selected a cell, a large dark highlight will appear over the cell. This only selects the cell; it does not select the data in the cell. To select the actual data in the cell, click again on the cell. The black highlight will shrink so that only the data is highlighted. You can also select part or all of the data in a cell by holding down the left mouse button and dragging the cursor across the text. When you release the mouse button, the part of the data you have dragged across will be highlighted.

At this point, you can type Control-C and the contents of the cell will be copied to the Windows clipboard. You can also hit Control-X and the program will simultaneously delete the data from the cell and copy it to the clipboard. (Cutting is only useful in the Comments or Flags field because the editor will not tolerate an empty field for the Station Names or the measurements.)

Pasting Data. You can place (paste) data from the clipboard into any cell in the editor. Remember that the data should be compatible with field you are pasting to, because the Editor is always testing to be sure that only the proper type of data is entered in each cell. For example, if you try to paste a comment into a compass angle cell, the Editor will complain.

To paste data from the Windows Clipboard, you must select the cell that you wish to paste the data to. You can do this by clicking the mouse cursor on the target cell. You can also select the cell by using the Arrow Keys or the Enter Key. Once you have selected a cell, a large black highlight will appear over the cell.

At this point hitting Control-V will overwrite the highlighted data with the data from the clipboard. If only part of the data is highlighted, only that part will be overwritten. If you only want to add the data from the clipboard instead of overwriting it, click on the cell one more time or hit F2. The highlight will disappear and a small cursor will appear in its place. This means that the cell is in edit mode and the data will be inserted at the cursor.

Undoing A Paste. You can undo the paste operation by hitting Control-Z or Esc before you leave the cell. This will restore the original value.
